Published Who murdered Scott and Madeline's parents (was it Claimayne?). Usually, I drop books that start bothering me, but I felt compelled to end the story because it was a pirate book. If you really want to know some pretty required plot points, read Alternate Routes first. And it is; a bunch of really fun characters, fast-moving plot, humorous twists in the story line, all help to make this an enjoyable read.This is one of Tim's older novels, but it's a doozy.
The effort Powers puts into each novel is remarkable; you can't work a new history of the world into the cracks in verifiable history without spending some time with the history. Tim Powers is always Excellent and this is a fine book but for whatever reason it did not reach me the way Declare or Last Call did.

The characters in this book - they're weird, they've believable, and they're not SO interesting or developed that the book drags or feels over-written or false. Like Waldrop, Powers can cram a narrative to the brim with eccentric facts and connect the dots into seamless fun. So basically this book is (or ought to be) tons of fun, oodles upon oodles of it, and it was read for audio version spectacularly by Bronson Pinchot (that goofy looking actor from the 80s and 90s, who apparently still acts, but not a very familiar screen face, but has actually made a huge career for himself as an audiobook narrator and good for him, he’s great at it, makes a real difference when an actual actor narrates)…and yet…walking with this book, my attention would just drift off, consistently.
