Tremont Thunderhead Prong Trail is a 14.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Townsend, Tennessee that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. Overall very beautiful and worth it!!Beautiful. The Shuckstack lookout tower just a few miles north of Fontana Dam on the AT is worth the time to check out too. The trail is good for all skill levels and is primarily used for hiking and walking. There is a gondola near the start point of this trail as well as near the end point of this trail. The covered trail sections are exceptional. We did it in 1 hr 52 minutes and rode gondola back down (after a beer!).
Excellent views from a challenging hike. We were excited to do the entire trail but it was closed at mile 2 for mountain work. To reach the trailhead from the Townsend "Y" intersection, drive 7.5 miles west on Laurel Creek Road to the turn-off for the Cades Cove Campground. Just wish more people knew trail etiquette that uphill hikers have the right away :). I started at 11AM. Please note: Users have reported that the Thunderhead Lodge is closed, but you can still hike the trail and get good views all the way to the Lodge. Go, enjoy it and take your time. Longer than stated distance. Lead Cove trail to Bote Mountain trail to Appalachian trail to Thunderhead Mountain. Thunderhead Prong Quiet Walkway is a 1.3 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Townsend, Tennessee that features a river. Pretty exposed at the beginning but goes through trees later in the hike.
We loved this hike, AND it was extremely challenging. Tons of wildflowers towards the top around late June. Some bugs, but great trail. (Including bear crawling though rhododendron.)
