Woodward obviously relied on numerous clerks (and perhaps some justices) to get the inside scoop on the interpersonal dynamics of the nation's highest judges at a critical time in jurisprudential history.
The psychology lesson is insight into how these judges, who I certainly took to have a measure of impartiality, still remained political animals (and still very human)-they decided cases not on principals but on how they felt about issues and where they stood on the political spectrum. Also, a very interesting book for general knowledge. The psychology lesson is insight into how these judges, who I certainly took to have a measure of impartiality, still remained political animals (and still very human)-they decided cases not on principals but on how they felt about issues and where they stood on the political spectrum. Though this cuts away at the idealism I had about the sanctity of the Supreme Court, it was a reminder about what they were doing-laying down judgment, which at its very heart is about one's interpretation and feeling about an issue. The history lesson it provides are a description of the pulse and perspective of this country in the time frame that book discusses, as well as the major issues the nation was facing at the time.
Riprova. I would have liked to learn more about Blackmun and I felt that Woodward's portrayal of him was very different than his portrayal in "Becoming Justice Blackmun." Robert "Bob" Upshur Woodward is an assistant managing editor of Robert "Bob" Upshur Woodward is an assistant managing editor of I also have more respect for Thurgood Marshall than to believe that he just loafed along his days on the Court.
The Brethren: Inside the Supreme Court by Bob Woodward (1-Jun-1905) Hardcover I found the behind-the-scenes politicking and negotiating fascinating, but also disheartening. He writes as if he was sitting in the chambers while the judges discuss these cases, quoting verbatim.
While today's Court line-up is more conservative, the process of internal court politics is certainly similar, so this book remains useful in attempting to understand both the history of the Court when it issued so many of those decisions that still drive politicians mad today, and how the often convoluted opinions on divisive issues are formed. Still, this book was a fascinating look at the Supreme Court both as a bit of history and as a good look at how the Court is still run. I have again gone back in time to a book that has ties to the Nixon years, co-written by a pair of Washington Post reporters with ties to Nixon's fall. I had really looked forward to this book based on the reviews it has received. I read ~10 pages a night over a few months and this was a good book for that slow pace.
Because then he would lose his cache as a journalist.

This book is an interesting look at the way the Supreme Court functioned a few decades ago, but perhaps the time has come for Bob Woodward to revisit this topThis book was written before Ronald Reagan appointed, in 1981, the first woman to the Supreme Court, so at the time, "the brethren" was an appropriate way to refer to the justices on the Supreme Court. This is an excellent book and very thought provoking. Just finished “The Brethren” by Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong. The Brethren is the first detailed behind-the-scenes account of the Supreme Court in action. Very good. This book was published in 1979 but the audible version was not released until 2019. He was really a piece of work. This book is the one that turned me from someone a bit interested in the Supreme Court into a dedicated court-watcher and consumer of books on the subject; it humanized the Court and explained its inner workings in a way that made its insides as fascinating as its decisions were important. I don't remember much of it except how the clerks would write most of the legal documents for the justices. Woodward and Armstrong write with an "inside the beltway" politically-correct perspective which may seem a little dated today.
The political battlegrounds have changed in a generation. Ti preghiamo di riprovareSiamo spiacenti, ma non è stato possibile registrare il voto. Written by Bob Woodward, one of the era's most celebrated investigatory reporters, with inside help from Justice Potter Stewart, the book takes you behind the scenes of the Burger Court through the Nixon and Ford presidencies. This time frame corresponds to the first seven years of Warren E. Burger's appointment as Chief Justice. Riprova.
Since I am now pretty much entirely an audible person, I have just now finally listened to this book that covers The supreme court terms of 1969 through 1975. Even though the book is now nearly 40 years old, and all the protagonists have passed on (excepting Justice Stevens), the writing is engaging, the issues timeless, and the insights unique. This book is an interesting look at the way the Supreme Court functioned a few decades ago, but perhaps the time has come for Bob Woodward to revisit this topic.I absolutely loved this book! Through and through. I had no idea Warren Burger was such an insufferable person. The time period ranges from1969 to the historic decision of Gregg v. Georgia in 1976, part of the "July 2 cases" which reopened the states' power to impose the death penalty. When it was originally released, Jimmy Carter was just being elected President, and the Congress was 2/3 Democratic. The Brethren covers the Supreme Court of the United States of America from 1969 to 1975. Digital products purchased from this site are sold by Simon & Schuster Digital Sales Inc. I picked this book up at my Dad's house during a recent trip. I read this book in high school, as a high school senior for a Constitutional Law class.
