Before touring the spectacular Ice World at the Susukino site, why not visit Mount Moiwa (è»å²©å±±), located in the south-western part of Sapporo?
From a small exhibition some 60 years ago, it has evolved into a major wintertime event attracting tourists from all around the world now. We were at the Sapporo snow festival as part of a winter trip to Japan a few years ago and absolutely loved it but like you we didn’t allow enough time to see as much of Hokkaido as we wanted to. The view from the observation deck is beautiful despite the horrendous windy and snowy weather. Winter is about to come in the Hokkaido region as I feel the cold out there!
We start off by traveling to Hokkaido's number one city, Sapporo. The viewpoint is spectacular since mount Moiwa is the highest point around the valley that encompasses Sapporo.
Have fun riding on cool ice sculptures at the Fureai Hiroba Plaza, or hang out for some warmth with hot drinks at the swanky Ice Bar. However, you cannot get this view from anywhere else.I arrived at the tower around 8:30pm and got up to the observation deck quite quickly. Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido, the northern-most island of Japan. The Japanese have a word for it – kogarashi. It is the center of all Sapporo event, from the Christmas market and winter illumination to the famous Sapporo Snow Festival in February.Sapporo was the first city holding winter illumination event in 1981, and its success has inspired other cities in Japan to follow suit.Sapporo’s winter illumination therefore is especially impressive. The city is relatively young compared to other large Japanese cities such as Tokyo or Osaka. The journey took about 15 minutes, cost 200yen. Moiway ropeway has a shuttle bus that takes visitors from the streetcar station to the get-in point. Afterward, I then walked around the German Christmas Market to try to warm myself with a cup of hot chocolate. You can soak in the alluring illuminated views of the sculptures and take as many photos as you wish till 11pm (10pm on the last day of the festival).As the second largest site of the Sapporo Snow Festival, the Tsudome site features family-oriented amusement rides in the community dome. It has adequate amenities, with free wifi, and the room was quite comfortable.Note: I would not recommend staying anywhere too far from Sapporo Station. In 2017, the dates of festival in Odori Park area is Feb 6th to 12th. At Nijo, besides fresh local produce and seafood such as crabs, salmon eggs and sea urchin, you can also find several restaurants and little drinking places along the narrow Noren Yokocho street. Besides the awesome ice sculptures on display, there is also an Ice Sculpture Contest being held here. Since you are in the Susukino district, you must check out the popular Ramen Yokocho (ã©ã¼ã¡ã³æ¨ªä¸) which literally means noodles street.
Feel out of this world with such captivating snowy scenery in the amazing nature!Sapporo is a city full of delicious cuisines, and one cannot forget the miso ramen which is a signature of Sapporo specialty.
What other places will you want to visit in Sapporo? At the 11-chome site reserved for international participants, you can also watch the teams who are working hard to complete the best sculpture during the festival. This modern built up means that the city street system mimicked a more organized rectangular system of modern North America cities.
Right in the heart of the red light district of Sapporo, you will find two narrow alleys filled with Sapporo ramen restaurants just opposite each other. Your little ones will definitely enjoy Tsudome with all the exciting action here, so you may be pleased to know that this site will be open earlier from 1 February for 12 days!Now that you have toured all three sites of the Sapporo Snow Festival, you should also check out the beer that Sapporo is famous for before you leave the city. The Asahikawa Winter Festival takes place around the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival.
