(Les Hassell/News-Journal Photo)A fallen tree blocks the road Thursday at Wells and 12th streets in Longview morning after overnight storms moved through the area, knocking out power and causing some flooding in the area.Storms on Thursday dumped the most rainfall ever for May 2 in Longview since records going back to 1902 and caused more than 2,700 homes and businesses to lose power, flooded roads and left motorists stranded, officials said.The 4.81 inches of rain that fell as of about 5 p.m. Thursday broke a record of 4.42 inches set in Longview on May 2, 1956, said Aaron Stevens, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Shreveport.Stevens said a “great, big group of thunderstorms” kept coming over the Longview area Thursday.The storms brought the year’s total in Longview to 20.81 inches, 5.54 inches above normal but lower than the 23.22 inches recorded at this time a year ago, he said.Flooding trapped a vehicle with two adults, an infant and an older child Thursday morning on Rusk County Road 1114 near Overton, with a successful rescue effort from first responders from the Rusk County Office of Emergency Management and the Kilgore and Overton fire departments, said Patrick Dooley, Rusk County’s emergency management coordinator.Dooley said the agencies responded about 9 a.m., with the Kilgore Fire Department deploying a boat with two swift-water rescuers on board.He said the water level was as high as the doors of the vehicle and pushed it into the tree line.“It probably took a good 10, 15 minutes.
