She specialized in electrical power s… But at the end of her first year, a summer job as a “computer assistant” assigned to solve mathematical equations at AT&T in New York proved so interesting, she wound up staying for six years.By that time, the United States had entered into World War I and Edith Clarke wanted to contribute to the war effort. This, my friends, is the world that Edith Clarke grew up in. Being a woman she was unable to find work as an engineer but she persevered and eventually became an electrical engineer in the Central Station Engineering Department of General Electric and achieved considerable success with the company. After regaining her health, she enrolled in the University of Wisconsin’s civil engineering program. It was a time when transmission lines were getting longer; longer lines meant greater electrical loads; and greater loads meant more chances for the system to go down. William Edwards... Edith Clarke was the first woman to earn an electrical engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). And when she returned to GE in 1922, it was as a salaried electrical engineer.
She was the first woman to deliver a paper at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the first female engineer whose professional standing was recognized by Tau Beta Pi, and the first woman named as a Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Happy to finally get the job she deserved, she worked diligently with the company for several years before leaving in 1945.She published her first paper titled ‘Transmission Line Calculator’ in 1923 and became the first woman to deliver a paper at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) in 1926.In 1925, she received a patent for the Clarke calculator and proceeded to receive least two more patents, one for electric power transmission in 1927 and the other for an electric circuit in 1944.Her two-volume text, ‘Circuit Analysis of A-C Power Systems’, published in 1943 was very well received by the engineering fraternity and quickly became the main textbook for new engineers. She joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin in 1947, becoming the first female professor of Electrical Engineering in the country. "Edith Clarke's engineering career had as its central theme the development and dissemination of mathematical methods that tended to simplify and reduce the time spent in laborious calculations in solving problems in the design and operation of electrical power systems. Edith Clarke was a pioneer in electrical engineering who used math to improve our understanding of power transmission. Where research meets reality to propel GE and the world forward. Located between Nevada and Arizona in the Colorado River, it uses hydroelectric power. She taught for ten years and retired in 1957.She invented the Clarke calculator for which she got a patent in 1925. She also received rigorous training in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry which laid the foundation of her future career.Orphaned at a young age, she used her inheritance to fund her education at Vassar College where she studied mathematics and astronomy and graduated in 1908 with Phi Beta Kappa honors.Edith Clarke embarked on a teaching career and she taught mathematics at a private girls' school in San Francisco for some time before moving on to Marshall College in Huntington.
And in 1919, she received the first Master of Science degree in electrical engineering ever granted to a woman by MIT.Plus, she had been bitten by the travel bug. It is this process Edith Clarke helped pioneer. She credited her training there in arithmetic, algebra and geometry as the foundation of her career. With her newly-minted degree, she taught math at a private girls’ school in San Francisco for a year before heading back east to Marshall College inBut in pursuit of that “something else,” she became seriously ill in 1911 — so ill she feared she might die. Clarke helped pioneer the turbine system that turns water power into electricity inside the Hoover Dam and similar facilities around the country and world.
So she accepted a position as a supervisor of computers in the Turbine Engineering Department in GE. Born into a prosperous family in Maryland in the late 19th century, she was not expected to become a career woman but a wife, mother, and gracious hostess. Expecting to retire in 1945, she went back to her roots, buying a farm in rural Maryland. Believing she needed more education in her field, she left AT&T to enroll as a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the end of her first year, she took a job as a "Computer Assistant" to AT&T research engineer Dr. George Campbell who applied mathematical methods to the problems of long-distance electrical transmissions.Along with her job, she attended night classes in electrical engineering at Columbia University.
But two years later, she changed her mind. She wrote a comprehensive textbook still used in engineering schools and colleges, and was awarded two patents for her work in electrical power transmission. As a child, she had trouble with reading and spelling, but showed an exceptional aptitude for math and loved card games — especially Whist, which Poe describes in his “Murders in the Rue Morgue” as requiring an analytical mind. After her mother’s death, Clarke and her siblings were brought up by an uncle before she was sent to Briarley Hall Female Academy in Maryland. Edith Clarke (February 10, 1883 – October 29, 1959) was the first woman to be professionally employed as an electrical engineer in the United States, and the first female professor of electrical engineering in the country. After leaving GE she joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin.Edith Clarke was born on February 10, 1883, in Maryland as one of nine children in a prosperous family. But two years later, she changed her mind. One of nine children, both her parents died by the time she was just 12 years old. She remained at General Electric’s Central Station Engineering Department for 23 years.Building on her success, she became the first woman to present before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1926. 1.
From 1919 to 1945, she became a salaried employee just after two years of employment at General Electric, which was a great achievement at that time.
