The latest drought report is out and it paints a concerning picture for Leon County and the rest of the Panhandle. Unlike the other hazards that affect the state, droughts can impact large areas and last for months, even years.So, what is drought? It’s no secret that Tallahassee is in a food drought. But there may be some good news in sight: The Climate Prediction Center, along with some long-range ensemble guidance, is hinting at a chance of above-average rainfall between the next one to two weeks. The moderate drought conditions were in place for portions of Franklin, Wakulla, Leon, Jefferson and Taylor counties. The upgrade of areas along I-10, including Tallahassee, being moved into a severe drought. Moderate drought is removed from Nassau County, and abnormally dry conditions have developed in inland Escambia County. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. The most intense period of drought occurred the week of February 27, 2001 where D4 affected 39.08% of Florida land. Below normal precipitation leads to drought, which is caused by an above average persistence of high pressure over the drought area.

Valdosta had the most rainfall from Tuesday's storm system recording 1.54 inches at the airport while Tallahassee only received 0.78 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
The U.S. Drought monitor on Thursday depicted much of the Orlando area as in moderate drought, shown in tan, and a large area of severe drought in South Florida marked in orange.
At Tallahassee International, last month was the driest September ever. A moderate drought is now affecting much of the Florida Panhandle, and some cities haven’t received a drop of rain in more than four weeks. The rest of the Big Bend and most of South Georgia are listed under abnormally dry conditions, according to the Drought Monitor. The good news is that rain chances are looking more promising for the area by next week, but with the growing rainfall deficit we will need more than just a few showers in the area.
