Denzel Washing does a beautiful job of playing a shrink that helps Antwone dig deeper into why he feels the way he does. Too often, stories about Service life are about combat and the bonds formed under its strain. I love watching movies with Denzel Washington because he is such a good actor and usually plays in movies with a good plot and lots of action. Another blow came when his closest childhood friend was killed in a robbery. Washington's character, the physician, is also dealing with personal issues; and it is his evolving relationship with patient that makes him, by his own admission, a better individual and healer. But my... was I glad I finally did. More to the point, such CBT patterns as automatic thinking, which results in a series of nightmares that haunt him at the beginning of the movie, or the reminiscences of Mrs. Tate shouting in his face that even his own mother never wanted him (Antwone Fisher, 2002), can be observed in Antwone’s behavior.

The beauty of Fisher's screenplay is the story of a young man who must struggle, without those essential building blocks, to first construct a critical interpersonal relationship with his doctor in order to then find missing wider connectedness with family, tribe, and community, and to replace with a sense of identity what was disconnection and anger. I believe, that even though we try to focus on the good in our lives, most of us have had some horrific thing that took place during our childhood that created problems for us later.
