This is a very depressing film, as it deals with an elderly couple with ailing health and how they suffer together. This devastating drama about an elderly couple trying to cope when a stroke leaves the wife partly paralysed is honest, unsentimental and deeply sensitive. Georges' refusal to compromise his loving pragmatism in the face of his daughter's appeal to emotion and the bleak ending may lead some to a superficial view that Georges is uncaring but I found him just the opposite. Must-see for anyone who ever acted as a carer for an elderly person: many spot-on observations about all parties involved: the now ill/ frail person herself (how to preserve one's dignity), the care industry ( oh the wonders of equipment), nurses ( be practical), helping neighbours (input on their terms and what do you do in return? It's the most touching and real story I have ever seen covering this predicament of old age, well acted and filmed.
