Make sure your shoes have GRIP. Not too many people, but those who were there were wearing masks for the most part. The view is amazing and well worth it in my opinion though.Lots of shade once you get down into the canyon, pretty setting with all the water too. We had not visited the store prior to booking and did everything on-line and on the phone. It's a 2 1/2 mile hike uo there. There is a part of the loop that becomes more woodsy and it’s beautiful! Please bring a hiking stick to keep you steady and help with your balance. Some parts are very narrow and dangerous. Be careful as there seem to be many paths that seem plausible but look out for shoe prints. My dogs and I do this hike about 3 times a month. Keep your eyes and ears open, especially on the decent. The trails are a bit dangerous as it is very narrow and there's a lot of rocks/sand. Sorry. The first mile of this trail is fairly easy and level then you hit a series of switchbacks and the grade/difficulty of the trail increases. I came for a trial to make sure that my 4 year old would like it. Go east to Muir Peak which makes this a nice 12 mile round trip.To do this trail, you will start at cobb estate. Timing wise, I completed the the climb in 1hr 30mins. Even on a mid morning weekday. This isn’t an easy hike but it’s not the toughest. The way up is relatively steep, and then you get to the fork where the loop connects. But it was a challenge and I did it. Please don’t play loud music on the trails. The loop to inspiration point from the old hotel site is probably the hardest part of the trail. This one leads to Henninger Flat, which is a nice little camp/picnic area. Def coming back! But overall it was a great workout. This 3 star review is for Castle Canyon trail (Inspiration point 5 stars though). The downhill trail back to the gate is brutal I almost fell off the cliff. The first half climb is paved and quite a bear.
The ruins are worth checking out even if you don’t plan to camp. The right way was actually to climb up this rock and continue on. I’ve included an optional hike extension to Inspiration Point, which adds another 5 miles onto the hike. There's a site where you can see the remnants of the trains which is the halfway point if you're already huffing and puffing like me.
