Wiley’s portraits offer a rubric through which to engage with the beautiful yet fraught histories and traditions that black women — and all women — are heir to. It will be his first solo exhibition of new work in the UK and features portraits exclusively of women. With a heavy focus on young black men, his work serves to overturn the framing of black masculinity as synonymous with violence in the USA and present a more vibrant and sensitive view.He references the Old Masters in his portraits, which are often based on people he meets on the street.Wiley has painted a number of famous faces, including Michael Jackson, LL Cool J and Notorious B.I.G., but is undoubtedly best known for his portrait of A new sculpture by Wiley was erected in Times Square last year, as a response to Confederate General J.E.B. The picture shows Obama seated in front of Wiley’s signature leafy backdrop, which he has said he would never have painted without Morris’s inspiration.It makes sense then that his first exhibition of new work in the UK would take place at Walthamstow’s Known primarily for his portraits of young black men, he has made it his focus to feature exclusively women in his upcoming show. They wholly embody myriad positions with regard to social class, status, religion, colonialism and the negotiation of gender.For over fifteen years Wiley has sourced William Morris’s iconic floral designs for his paintings.

12 Gilman’s text is a semi-autobiographical tale which sees her narrator confined to her bedroom after being diagnosed with hysteria and explores the disastrous consequences of denying women independence. Known for his heroic images of black subjects, Wiley mixes a photorealistic portraiture with highly patterned backdrops, which reference the floral motifs of William Morris. Nigerian-American artist Kehinde Wiley shot to international stardom when he painted Barack Obama's official portrait for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The Yellow Wallpaper is an exhibition of new portraits by American artist Kehinde Wiley. In February 2020 ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, Wiley’s first solo institutional exhibition in the UK, opened at William Morris Gallery, London, featuring six new large-scale female portraits. A monumental public sculpture ‘Rumors of War’, the artist’s largest work to date, was unveiled in Times Square, New York in September 2019. In Wiley’s new portraits, each woman is positioned as autonomous, as powerful, as open to individual interpretation and as an emblem of strength within a society of complicated social networks. Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic is organized by Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum.
