There are five dialects of the Arrernte language: South-eastern, Central, Northern, Eastern and North-eastern. This exception was discovered by Messrs Spencer and Gillen among the Arunta of central Australia, some allied septs, and their nearest neighbours to the north, the Kaitish.
The natives believe that the tribe is composed of two groups with differing physical characters. Aranda, also spelled Arunta, Aboriginal tribe that originally occupied a region of 25,000 square miles (65,000 square km) in central Australia, along the upper Finke River and its tributaries.
