It is paved for the first half and then turns to a dirt trail. Thankfully, photo-editing makes it easy peasy to fix your image to your liking. That view was worth the challenging climb.Nice view but skip the trail to the top. I use my neutral graduated density filter if the sky is very bright and the foreground is not. You could smell it and it ruined the experience. The trail isn’t overly technical but I wouldn’t wear flip flops.
Waterrock Knob is one of my favorite overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a big parking lot in center, visitor center on the edge with shop and bathroom, and a walking trail up the hill. Next time I’ll be sure to wear sneakers! Here, I’ll let you see the original. It was almost entirely up hill and I was out of breath when I got to the viewing patio which was overgrown and had nothing much to see.
Can bring own chairs to sit...Worth the drive up, and if you’re up for it, the climb to the summit is well worth it.

This image is a sunset during our recent Super Moon event. There are nice picnic tables with great views. It features a large parking lot with great views all around, restrooms and hiking trails. The parking area is at around 5820 feet and adjacent to the parking area is where most set up for pics--with views of sunset in one direction and sunrise in the other. At mile marker 451.2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway there is a great stop with a National Park Service Visitor Center that is open seasonally. The group went up to see the sunset, but we did was capture the beauty of this overlook. It was a steep hike but I made it in dress boots!
